"New GBPA-sponsored initiatives have greatly impacted occupancy levels in the International Bazaar, and now we are experiencing renewed interest from commercial applicants in Freeport's city centre," she shared.

DOWNTOWN GETS NEW BUSINESSES

mu14thumbOver 30 new businesses have opened in Freeport's downtown area from June 2010 through to mid-February. President of The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited (GBPA) Ian Rolle, describes these figures as encouraging. ‘The success of the Downtown Turnaround Project can be seen in the increase of new businesses in the city centre. The revitalization has brought about a new spirit, which has led to renewed optimism amongst storeowners," he said.

Rolle further noted that along with the usual retail establishments catering to clothing, hair or footwear, downtown is beginning to attract a new breed of entrepreneurs, including florists, pastry artisans, event planners, lawyers and property management consultants.

"We're definitely excited at the numbers and the shift in products being offered. GBPA sought to ‘make it happen' and now business owners are running with their

entrepreneurial ideas," he added.

‘UP WITH PEOPLE’ CAST ASSIST WITH ‘KEEP GRAND BAHAMA CLEAN’ EFFORTS

mu13thumbFreeport, Bahamas - During their one-week visit to Grand Bahama, cast members of ‘Up with People' (UWP) busily assisted the Keep Grand Bahama Clean (KGBC) committee with various tasks on the island.

Cast members lent their physical strength as they engaged in clean-ups at The Grand Bahama Home for the Aged (GBHA) and along the streets. Much needed support was also rendered to staff of the Rand Nature Centre as UWP members performed various odd jobs.

The artistic talents of group members came to the fore during special performances along with the KGBC puppets at several of the island's schools and at the Sir Charles Hayward Children's Library.

THE SALVATION ARMY BENEFICIARIES OF GBPA ‘CLOTHING DRIVE’

mu15Employees of The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited (GBPA) and Group of Companies made a generous donation to The Salvation Army on Tuesday, following a successful clothing drive amongst staff members.

According to Yanique Pinder, 2010-2011 ‘Group Employee of the Year', over 1,000 units were collected, consisting of men, women and children's apparel, shoes and fashion accessories.

"We are extremely excited at the success of our campaign, ‘Walk a mile in my shoes, share the clothes on my back'. It was very important for every member of the GBPA family to support this drive so that we in turn would be able to assist The Salvation Army in their efforts to service the needs of those in the community," stated Pinder.
