It was an exhilarating day for some 70+ young ladies attending this year's 2009 Sharon Smith's Basketball Camp. The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited (GBPA) is committed to the betterment of the lives of the Grand Bahama community, especially as it relates to our youth and is therefore a proud sponsor of the 2009 Sharon Smith Girl's Basketball Camp. Vice President of The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited, Ginger Moxey, popped in on the young Basketball stars during today's morning session of camp and shared brief words of encouragement with the young ladies, "You must remember the importance of hard work, persistence and dedication. With these three attributes, you will accomplish your goals," concluded Mrs. Moxey.

Now in its eighth year, The Sharon Smith Girl's Basketball Camp aims to develop and maintain an effective and efficient learning environment for young girls from the ages of 6-19.

The camp's purpose is to:

  • Create an environment that will build self-esteem, encourage the will to rise above adversity and stand against the influence of negative peer pressure.
  • Maintain trustworthy relationships with participants, parents, counselors, instructors and positive community influences.
  • Develop programs and activities to motivate young girls to succeed in future goals academically, athletically, professionally and spiritually.

During the week long camp, the ladies will gain an appreciation for team concepts and sportsmanship. Knowledge will be expanded in all areas of the game including, shooting, passing, ball-handling, offensive moves and defense.
